UTS Advancement and Pulse Agency: Darlinghurst Public History Initiative Case Study

Introduction

Late in 2023, the University of Technology Sydney Advancement approached Pulse Agency and Studio Little Frames to work together on an ambitious project: creating a video that would represent a key piece of work of the “Darlinghurst Public History Initiative,” commissioned by the Paul Ramsay Foundation.

This initiative breathes life into the multifaceted history of the Darlinghurst area by adopting the place-based historical method in a creative process with the community to amplify their stories.

The challenge

The project presented several challenges that required a nuanced and thoughtful approach:

  1. Capturing a Complex Narrative: The Darlinghurst Public History Initiative involved various media forms, including books, podcasts, photography, and digital history projects. The challenge was encapsulating these diverse elements into a cohesive and compelling video narrative.
  2. Collaborative Coordination: Pulse Agency was responsible for producing the video content, curating all assets for a web microsite, and sourcing talents and locations. This required close collaboration with UTS Advancement, historians, and local creatives to ensure the storyline was authentic and resonated with the community.
  3. Diverse Audience Engagement: The video needed to engage a broad audience, including local residents, academic historians, and policymakers. Balancing these perspectives while maintaining a clear and engaging storyline was a critical aspect of the project.

The Solution

Pulse Agency approached the project with a focus on storytelling and visual impact:

  1. Storyline Development: Working closely with UTS Advancement and the filming crew, Pulse Agency developed a storyline that weaved together the historical significance of Darlinghurst with personal stories from the community. The narrative was designed to highlight the area’s transformation over time, capturing the voices and experiences of its residents.
  2. Asset Curation and Talent Sourcing: Pulse Agency curated a range of assets, including historical photographs, archival footage, and contemporary interviews. The agency also sourced local talents and scouted locations that would visually represent the essence of Darlinghurst.
  3. Video Production: The production process was meticulously planned to ensure that each Darlinghurst Public History Initiative element was accurately represented. The filming incorporated a mix of interviews, scenic shots, and historical overlays, creating a rich visual tapestry that reflected the depth of the project.

Results

 

The final video successfully encapsulated the spirit of the Darlinghurst Public History Initiative.

It not only showcased the extensive research and creative work that went into the project but also brought the stories of Darlinghurst to a broader audience.

The video served as a powerful tool for UTS and the Paul Ramsay Foundation to promote the initiative and engage stakeholders in the ongoing dialogue about the community’s past and future.
