Wikihistories – Australian Research Council – UTS

In late 2022, Wikihistories approached us to create images that aligned with their objectives and goals, develop a meaningful logo for their organisation and its mission, and create icons for some of their products.

The organisation is driven by four primary objectives:

  • Objective 1: Understand how Wikipedia’s biases are framed and evaluated.
  • Objective 2: Map the extent of entries pertaining to Australian historical events on Wikipedia to analyse systematic omissions of individuals and topics.
  • Objective 3: Investigate the construction of Wikipedia’s representations through practice.What is Wikihistories?
    Wikihistories is an organisation supported by the Australian Research Council and UTS (University of Technology in Sydney) that examines how history is created on Wikipedia by studying the generation of knowledge related to people, places, and events on the platform.
  • Objective 4: Establish an international consortium of researchers dedicated to investigating the sources of Wikipedia’s inequitable representations worldwide.

The challenge

The most challenging aspect of this project was the absence of reference images. We were tasked with creating a brand logo, icons, and imagery to align with the objectives.

As the brief did not provide explicit visual guidelines, we had to initiate an ideation stage to generate these assets.

We had to research Wikipedia and other organisations related to managing and handling the platform’s knowledge base.

The solution

After gathering relevant information about the organisation’s philosophy and approach to knowledge management on Wikipedia, we began producing ideas aligned with the researchers’ vision for Wikihistories.

Through iterative reviews and refinements, we finalised four images that aligned with their goals, a logo that represents their role in the Wikipedia universe, and an industry-formatted HEX icon for the release of their digital tools.

Below are some images that were part of the ideation process conducted with the researchers to arrive at a cohesive visual representation that could be designed with high quality and delivered effectively
